Today, there are over 5 million Palestinian refugees registered with UNRWA. About one-third of these refugees live in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT), while the majority of refugees are in Jordan, Lebanon and Syria2. This is a result of over 700,000 Palestinians being forcibly displaced from Palestine for the establishment of Israel during what Palestinians refer to as the Nakba “catastrophe” in 1948, becoming refugees. The United Nations Relief and Work Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) was established in 1949 to support these refugees.
