Medical Doctor and Surgeon with a Master’s in Social Medicine from UAM-Xochimilco, Mexico, and a specialization in International Health from PAHO in Washington D.C. He holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Barcelona.
Since 2001, Leyva Flores has been a Senior Medical Researcher at the National Institute of Public Health (INSP) in Mexico, where he has led pioneering work on vulnerable groups and health, founding this research line within the institute. His primary research interests include health policy, migration and health, and social inequity in health. His work has significantly contributed to understanding the intersection of health and migration, especially in Central America and Mexico.
He is currently the Director of the Health Management and Leadership Area at the Center for Health Systems Research, where he also coordinates the Doctoral Program in Health Systems Sciences and the Migration and Health Studies Unit.
