Epidemiologist and public health expert, holding an MD and a PhD from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

He has extensive experience as an Emeritus Professor at the Federal University of Bahia and as a Senior Investigator at Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz). Throughout his career, he has made significant contributions to research on social and environmental determinants of health. His work has focused on topics like health inequalities, poverty reduction, and environmental policies’ effects on public health.

Currently, Barretto leads the CIDACS Climate Platform, where he studies the impact of climate change on health. His leadership in major scientific projects has garnered numerous accolades, including his election to the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and the World Academy of Sciences. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he co-founded the Covida Network and served as an advisor to the Governors of Brazil’s Northeast region, providing essential guidance for public health measures.
